History of Pier 39 Sea LionsThe California sea lions have called Pier 39 home for over 20 years. The entertaining, barking sea lions can be seen on Pier 39’s K dock and West Marina, close to the rich food supply in the San Francisco Bay. The sea lions are drawn to Pier 39’s floating docks because they move up and down with tide. A Pier 39 sensation, the sea lion population has grown to over 300. For the past two decades, The Marine Mammal Center, which is devoted to the rescue and rehabilitation of marine mammals, advised PIER 39 that the sea lions should be allowed to stay.
